Businesses situated on Newport’s Holyrood Street have issued a plea for help as the Isle of Wight Council looks to not only make the street one-way, but remove around 5 vital car parking spaces too.
As previously reported by Island Echo, a number of roads in and around Newport and Cowes are being altered for a temporary period of 18 months to encourage cycling in the area.
Under the plans, Holyrood Street will be made one-way for motorised vehicles (towards the High Street) with a cycle lane contraflow. Included within this plan is the removal of up to 8 parking spaces, which will be replaced with just 3 parallel spaces and 1 motorcycle bay.
Local business Vision Impact has taken to social media to say that the loss of parking will be detrimental to the business in what is already a difficult climate. They say that the removal of more parking in Newport will put people off going into the Town Centre, making it even more difficult for Islanders to support local businesses.
It is claimed that more than 3 residential premises in Holyrood Street already have parking permits for the area, meaning that not only with the spaces be potentially filled but other residents will have to seek alternative parking.
It is feared that a number of local businesses will lose out due to the lack of parking, including: Pets with Hart, Adrienne Wroath Jewellers, Wight Gold, Isle of Wight Traders, Fit Box Gym, Andrew Ross Salon, Dabells Flooring and Rugs, Hursts, The Walled Garden Cafe, Couture, Suzie Warner Bridal, Barber Cube, Gift to Nature, Master of Disguise, Chips and One Holyrood.

It’s all about try to fill empty car parks
Contraflow cycle lane??? I thought all one way streets had one already!! Recipe for disaster. The council jumping on the green bandwagon.
I thought that. How can we get more cyclists knocked of their bikes, I know make them ride the wrong way up a one way street….. 😀
Another ill thought out idea by our moronic council, forcing drivers to use the car parks, closing down free parking spaces( outside Bargemans) , before escalating car park charges, again. No discussion with local businesses, ( be interesting to know what the collective business rates are for those affected ). The traffic system in Newport is chaotic most of the time, but hey, we’ve created miles of cycle routes so you can cycle to the closed shops. And why a contraflow, it’s already legal for cyclists to use one way streets in either direction. More money wasted.
Miles?
Only legal if there is signage saying it is permitted, I believe.
Temporary for 18 months
Just like they said about the £1 seafront night parking this was supposed to be temporary
Just park in hursts car park like every other piss taker that’s not shopping there !
It makes you wonder who in the council comes up with all these ideas and pushes them through without even talking to the people they will affect.
Enough is enough… get rid of these advisers.
Left-wing, tree hugging scroungers on benefits.
I have a vague recollection that if a business is adversely effected by some temporary interference, extended road works for example and perhaps even extended temporary (18 month) cycle routes, they are entitled to apply for a rate rebate or reduction.
I’m sure the council will do everything they can decry and avoid any such claims but it might make them sit up and take notice.
Yet another scheme to waste our money. IF they who sit in County Hall were to get off their b*ms they would see that cyclists already go just where they want and to hell with any laws of the road.
What is it with Councils that they are so anti-motorist? Do they not realise that motorists spend far more money than bus passengers, or cyclists? Or are they all petty Hitlers on benefits?
Just pave over it. Close the road.
How is creating cycle lanes green if motorists by the hundreds have to then travel greater distances and have engines running longer ?. A cyclist riding on a main road ends up creating equavelant pollution of 100 cars per mile, given those needing to overtake, change down several gears then rev engine to get past. Plus add Extra mins sat behind trying to overtake.
Yet again we are all moaning about council making decisions that you and I have no say.
I would have thought by now you would of got use to it, someone voted them in thinking they would do a good job. Unfortunately they are just like the ones that were in there before and before that.
They promise use this and that, but once in they do what they want or are told?
Anyway why should any person who works for the council office be bothered about parking, they have all the parking they need behind the council office.
This council is so bloody arrogant. Why oh why don’t they represent the majority any more?? When are the next elections??…..
But that won’t get rid of the Jacks-in-Office with their own agendas.
The council trying to destroy local businessesSo they can push a few more two wheeled death machines through our towns.
