Ryde Town Council would like to hear residents’ views about the proposed West Acre Park housing development between Appley and Bullen.
The development provides for 475 houses on a greenfield site on the north-eastern edge of the town. 166 (35%) of the houses will be affordable and 116 (70%) of these will be for social rent.
Ryde Town Council does not have the power to decide whether or not this development should go ahead. However, it can submit comments to the Isle of Wight Council, which is the local planning authority. Therefore, in order to inform its comments, the Town Council would like to hear the views of those living in the town.
Diana Conyers, Chair of Planning for RTC, said:
“This is a major development, affecting the town as a whole. We would like to hear both positive and negative views and to hear from residents in all parts of the town, not just those in the immediate area.”

It’s a pity the artist’s impression drawing used at the top of this post actually had some resemblance of what is going to be built. I don’t envisage 4/5 bedroom houses with double garages being any part of this development and certainly not affordably housing.
Feel sorry for all residents in and around the area proposed. No matter how high a percentage is against this the Isle of Wight Council will go ahead and do whatever they want.

What is the definition of ‘affordable’ as used in this text? Affordable to whom? And for how long will it remain ‘affordable’? Until ‘affordable’ has been clearly defined it should not be quoted.
This development is not for local people its more second homes for the well off when many islanders have no homes. This development will see the loss of yet another dairy farm farm, we in danger of losing yet another farm buildings as well. The planning strategy is geared to infill and development that is not sustainable in the long term. The hospital cant cope at the moment care homes. The Sewer treatment works at Sandown is full capacity. There does seem to be coordinated plan in place to negate the Additional traffic that these developments bring with them
And why only Ryde to put there views

It wont just effect Ryde it will effect the whole of the island
No house is going to be affordable, with a massive recession striking and unpresendented unemployment. The only winners will be the mainland developers and the IWCC.
The current residents of Ryde’s comments will be very similar to those same views spoken over Pennyfeather ruination project, ie, insert those plans somewhere the sun never shines upon.
As the council will do what it wishes regardless, and will do whichever it makes the most money from from being paid by mainland councils, themselves only too pleased to rid themselves of social housing burdens to our council for a one off payment, then the artist impression will bear no resemblance to reality.
The pond will be full of beer and cider cans, Mc Donald’s cups and boxes, with the occasional Tesco trolley, and of course the soiled single mattress.
Tattooed chavs, and their numerous clones will infest the sight, roaring off in BMW’s doing deals, to their fully paid for new home, with no ‘declared’ work, free council tax, and child tax credits to supplement their home ‘cultivation income’.
Combine this with the hideous trash which will fill much of Pennyfeathers and Ryde will be a crime ridden, chav’s paradise, and both the developers and those chums on planning will be living nowhere near the destruction of green fields, ancient hedgerows, and magnificent trees which have stood for hundreds of years, to be destroyed to house scores of charity kept mini criminals amongst the lesser amount of decent people.
But the council will get more council tax, and a large thank you from their developers on a more ‘personal level’ thus then being able to take more out of an engorged pot for wage rises, expenses and pensions without it then ‘looking’ so bad, as it would if the same sum was taken from a smaller pot.
So it will go ahead whatever anyone says, and how ‘they’ wish it to be, and should ‘social housing’ be more profitable, then whatever is ‘agreed’ plans will be altered to suit the max income for them at a later date.
The then richer by far developers and councillors will then ensure they will be living no where near the horror, congestion, crime and misery they callously create for both current Ryde residents and the thousand of animals, plants and beauty that they will destroy, not for a while, but then for the rest of time.
Harcourt Sands has been begging to be demolished and built on…why not use that space instead of greenfield land.
Absolutely agree Benjamin. I don’t live in Ryde but who exactly is going to buy these properties and live in them? And 70% social housing, God help us. Who are going to fill these properties? With the Pennyfeathers development just over the road why, why ,why??? My guess is, the council will take lots and lots and lots of overspill from the waiting lists on the mainland who are waiting to be housed (the council get paid big bucks for taking these people, especially if they’re troublemakers). God help the island, we’ll have all sorts from Londonstan, Brummies and Scousers. If they are all law abiding, working people I’ll take it back….but I very much doubt it!!??
This old chestnut constantly repeated that council is paid to take hoardes of trouble making chavs from the mainland.. it’s one of those things that becomes true by repetition, even if it’s not (like myth that UK takes loadsa asylum seekers, when truth is France takes 4 times as many, and Germany 10 times..) I did a quick Google search to see truth of this assertion and didn’t see anything. What’s your source?
Sadly it will not matter what anyone says, or whether the Town Council and Planning Officersadvise refusal, this will go ahead because the IW Council need the revenue from the council tax 475 houses will raise eacvh year.
I feel desperately sorry for the farming family that live and work on this land and have done for 50 years.
Absolutely Scandalous to even be considering this application.
This is totally wrong it will spoil the area we have here this will bring more crime and anti social behavior to a nice quiet area I really hope this doesn’t go ahead but knowing the isle of wight council they will just let it go ahead anyway what a shame for our once lovely island
