Ryde rower Dale Buckett – competing for the Upper Thames Rowing Club – raced in a coxless 4 in the Wyfold Cup at Henley Royal Regatta: the world’s best known rowing regatta.
Dale’s crew performed excellently to reach the semi-final, where they were defeated by the narrowest of margins – just half a canvas – by N.S.R. Oslo of Norway. Prior to their semi-final defeat, they had fought their way through 2 rounds, beating Marlow Rowing Club by 2-and-a half lengths on the Wednesday and the Shandon Boat Club of Ireland by 1-and-a-half lengths on the Thursday.
Following the cancellation of Southsea Regatta the previous week, there was further disappointment for the Ryde Rowing Club crews and scullers when Poole Regatta – scheduled for Saturday 2nd July – was also cancelled due to the high winds. This cancellation was particularly disappointing for the Ryde Club as they had had one of the largest entries of the season to date.
