Work on Sovereign Housing Association’s 24 new affordable homes in Shalfleet was brought to a halt during the coronavirus lockdown, but things are on track for residents to move in later this year.
This 100% affordable rural development will build a whole new community at the site, with 13 homes for affordable rent and 11 for shared ownership.
The development at Shalfleet Meadows is part of Sovereign’s goals to build not just homes but communities in this rural area. In an area of high need, Sovereign’s not only built much-needed homes but also considered the wider environment with additional green space and a swale to control surface water.
Working with local company, Stoneham Construction, Shalfleet Meadows (on Burt Close in Shalfleet), also marks a new way of working for Sovereign. Through buying and developing land, the housing association’s been able to take better control of the site and employ more local people in its construction.
Sovereign’s also working closely with the local parish council and village residents to make sure that the development thoroughly meets the needs of the local people.
Construction at Shalfleet Meadows was stopped during lockdown, setting the completion of the site back by a few months. But Sovereign was able to continue shared ownership sales electronically and completed 11 sales during lockdown – helping to get Sovereign ready to restart construction.
Liz Evans, Sovereign’s Project Manager, said:
“We’ve worked hard at Shalfleet Meadows to get our quality affordable housing right. It’s great to work so closely with local people to help build a new community and enhance the existing one in Shalfleet.

Building at Shalfleet Meadows started in August 2018 and the development will see residents move in around September this year.
“The right homes in the right places” – what absolute piddle! People work hard all their lives in order to move up to a nice rural property with lovely country views – but no, let’s build a load of housing association houses. The place will be a blot on the landscape within a few years – at least druggies will know where to go for the next deal! Outrageous! !!
Please put brain in gear before spouting such rubbish. Do you come from Shalfleet, No I thought not. These houses are for residents living in that area, some in larger properties who want to stay in the village and down size. Some who would not have had a chance to rent a home where they were born and work. Good luck to them and well done Sovereign.
True, did the same to once lovely Chale. Now filled with rapid breeding charity kept low life, ruining the village not for a while, but forever.

I notice these houses have been built in a locality which has lots of job opportunities without having to travel very far and really close to a GP surgery and shops. !!!!!!
By the way, has anyone got a clear definition of ‘affordable’ ?
Affordable is cheaper than paying extortionate private rent you people that own your own homes think you are above less fortunate people because you live in social housing it doesn’t mean your all lowlife scroungers and it is on a bus route !!!
They won’t have to worry about job opportunities or getting a bus to work because these people probably don’t have a job and are probably kept by the state, eg the British tax payer!

Why do we need more houses built on the island for where are the jobs coming from to house these people

What a nasty lot of people you are commenting on this article. It seams that none of you have a clue who gave the land, why the houses have been built and who you are being vile about. For your information an elderly friend of mine who was born in the village, is waiting to move into one of the properties. You assume that he is “low life”. What a brave person you are “Stop Building”, hiding you identity. I suggest that most of you are as you put it, the low life on the Island.
