Almost 5,000 local residents and partners have given their views on the Police and Crime Commissioner’s draft Police and Crime Plan ‘More Police, Safer Streets’ and showed significant support for all 9 priorities the Commissioner set out to make Hampshire and Isle of Wight 2 of the safest counties to live, work and visit.
In the draft Police and Crime Plan, Police and Crime Commissioner Donna Jones commits to recruiting an extra 600 officers, to improving police visibility and to working harder to combat anti-social behaviour. It also includes measures on rural crime, on unauthorised encampments and on making better use of technology.
The key priorities identified in the plan are:
- 600 more police officers by 2023
- Improve police visibility – bringing policing to your community
- Tackle anti-social behaviour
- Zero tolerance approach to knife crime
- Prevent youth offending
- More customer-focused police calling handling
- Crackdown on unauthorised encampments
- Improve outcomes for victims including female victims of violence
- A voice for rural communities
All 9 priorities gained significant support from those who responded to the consultation, with the top five being 600 more police officers, improving police visibility, tackling ASB, preventing youth offending and improving outcomes for victims.
Donna Jones, Police and Crime Commissioner said:
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank local residents and partners for giving me their views on policing priorities through my consultation, I received some really interesting feedback and it will genuinely help to shape my final Plan.
“It is essential that the priorities in my ‘More Police, Safer Streets’ Plan are tackling the issues that are of most concern to all our communities, as well as those offences that cause the most harm. The results of my consultation and the significant support for all nine priorities clearly show these are the right ones for people living across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.”
The ‘More Police, Safer Streets’ Plan sets the direction for policing across the two counties and the Commissioner will now review the feedback from the consultation before presenting the Plan to the Police and Crime Panel on 12 November 2021.
What people want is less suspended sentences and more jail sentences

Here we go again. Isle of Wight residents want to know how many extra police will be coming to the island. Hampshire and the Isle of Wight extra recruitment tells us nothing. Bet we will be short changed again.
With island homelessness skyrocketing the crackdown on ‘unauthorised encampments’ is something of extreme concern, the lack of housing through second home ownership needs to be addressed as we haves seen an influx of people to the island that have been housed to fufill a box ticking agenda and our own residents are suffering the consequences.
Perhaps if the UK didn’t allow, or returned the people who arrive without permission or passports, then the residents of the areas they settle in, wouldn’t feel the need to then upsticks to settle in places like the Isle of Wight, trying to capture a little of their life they ‘once’ knew.

Yes and the residents of the Isle of Wight specially those of us born here, where can we go to escape all those who come here and the character of the place changed forever for the worse? There is nowhere for us to go. I can’t think of anywhere in this country.

This does sound very promising. I do hope it comes to a positive result and not just another broken promise? Its just over a year away so I guess we’re find out soon enough!
It’s come to my attention that there are houses in Newport that play high pitch sounds that damage young people’s ears but are inaudible to older people.
Is this type of anti social behaviour going to be looked at, or is only young people that can be anti social?
I absolutely hate them… I’m early 30s so defintely not classed as a youth and I would say maybe classed as adult lol but I have very sensitive hearing and these things really hurt my ears! It’s a disgusting way of deterring anything
Would be good if they can stop those with modified exhausts on those noisy bikes and cars, Especially the idiot that makes his little motorbike back fire many times, and hammers it along the road so iot is very loud, ‘ Hey ! Listen to me, what a twat I am ‘
If people modify the vehicle in any way they need to inform their insurance company or they may not be insured.. which they prob are not anyway. Also what about the two lads that ride down Well St on pit bikes ( or similar to ) NO NUMBER PLATES, very loud and they are young.. ANTI SOCIAL behaviour bothering other people.
