The appeal for more kayakers to help with the safety cover for the 61st annual Sandown to Shanklin swim put out 3 weeks ago, (due to take place on Sunday 4th August), has been met with a brilliant response.
The swim’s Safety Officer, Duncan Heenan, told Island Echo:
“We made an appeal to Island kayakers on the Island to help make this the biggest swim yet, and they’ve responded even better than we had hoped. We’re now in a position to offer a place to 150 swimmers. The previous record was 120, and that seemed a lot. All we need now is the right weather to make it the biggest and best Pier-to-Pier swim ever.”
The swim forms a part of the Shanklin Regatta, and has been run on behalf of Shanklin Regatta Committee for the last 10 years by Isle of Wight Marlins Swim club. The finish and presentations are at Shanklin Rowing Club.
This year the start will be at 12:00 noon from Sandown, just west of the pier.
