East Cowes Vics have made the following statement via their Facebook page:
“The club are very sorry to announce that our Club Chairman Paul Phelps passed away on Thursday 24th Feb after a short illness.
“Paul joined the Vics as chairman after serving in the same role at Newport IW FC for a number of years and played a key role in helping the club compete in the Wessex League.
“Paul enjoyed his trips away with the lads to the games and even when he was ill he would still keep an eye on our results.
“Anyone who had met Paul will remember him as a kind and gentle man; he was a man who would always be there if you needed advice.
“Our thoughts and love are with Paul’s wife and family at time.”
East Cowes Vics stalwart John Simpkins added:
“A great chairman and a great friend, loved his football and wow did he love an end of season tour, I will be having a “small” scotch for you today RIP Mr Phelps.”
