Under-15 side Gosport Whites have celebrated winning the Mid-Solent League – the top league for their age group in Portsmouth – at their end-of-season awards on Ryde beach.
Gosport Whites is made up of players mainly from Brading but also has players from Downside and Gurnard. All the youngsters originate from the Isle of Wight.
The team decided to compete on the mainland to give the Island lads competitive experience against tough opponents. They play their home games at St Vincent’s College and are managed by Gary Parsons and coached by Peter Dyer.
Gosport Whites won their league by a single point.
Gary Parsons, who contacted Island Echo on behalf of Gosport Whites, has said:
“Our whole team is from the Isle of Wight and have played in the Mid-Solent ‘A’ Division (the top Saturday league in Portsmouth) this season. We managed to win the league after travelling over for every league game. It was a great achievement in our 1st season together.
“We couldn’t have done it without our sponsors, Allegri accountants, who provided our kit and training equipment. Aspire Ryde kindly let us use their minibus.
“Next year, we will be looking to carry on from our successful 1st season, be competitive in the league, cups, and Hampshire cup.”
