2 Wightlink-Wight Mountain CRT riders – Joe Staunton and James Veal – were in action in the E/1/2 category at Goodwood last Tuesday (7th June).
This was another fast-paced race with average speeds of almost 30mph.
Joe got in an early break with a small group of riders, leaving James to control the chasing bunch. Joe just missed out on a podium place in the sprint to the line, taking 4th in the company of some top riders.
James Veal took on the tough 60-mile Owslebury circuit in the Portsmouth North End Road Race on Saturday (11th June).
An early break by 10 riders left James chasing them down with the remaining peleton, but the bunch were unable to bring them back, and the gap hovered around the 90 second mark for 5 of the 7 laps, despite the attacks which injected speed into an already fast-moving group.
With 3 laps to go, the race was neutralised whilst the organisers caught a horse that was running around the course.
The restart was even faster than the earlier laps, and – on the final lap – the bunch started to fracture as fatigue set in on the uphill climb to the finish. James dug in and managed to win a bunch sprint for the minor places.
