Isle of Wight sailors Oliver Evans and Toby Atherton had a successful trip to Lake Garda in Italy as part of the British 29er team competing in the European Championships last week.
As well as being part of the British Team which won the Nations Trophy for the best country at the event, both sailors also enjoyed individual successes.
From a fleet of 210, Oliver finished inside the top 10 overall with a 9th position in the Gold fleet with his crew Will Jarman. Toby finished 1st in the Silver fleet with his crew Freddie Peters.
The 2 sailors – who are supported by Wightlink through the Isle of Wight Council’s Talented Athlete scheme – battled it out against Europe’s top sailors during the 6-day regatta.
“This has been my third time sailing on Lake Garda which is such a great venue and my best result so far. It was a great way to finish my 29er sailing partnership with Will Jarman. My next event is in two weeks’ time in Weymouth where I will be sailing with a new partner and hoping to gain selection for the British Youth Squad once again.”
Wightlink Chief Executive Keith Greenfield says:
“It is great to see Oliver and Toby competing at such a high level among Europe’s top sailors. We are delighted to support them both with cross-Solent travel through the Talented Athlete scheme and wish them all the best for future events.”
