The Earl Mountbatten Hospice has sailed to victory this week winning The Southern Cooperative/UKSA Cowes Cardboard boat race on Sunday as well as the award for the best boat.
The boat, which was painted in the bright yellow colour associated with the Hospice, was a work of art, created thanks to a host of generous donations; with top quality cardboard supplied and delivered free to the Island by Tri-Wall of Monmouth and paint, storage and building space supplied free by Vickers Car Craft and the building work itself completed by American boat builder Tom Moore.
Staff, family and friends of Earl Mountbatten Hospice who helped crew the boat during the race, dressed in colourful Hawaiian outfits, were thrilled with their win and pleased to help support another Island charity’s fundraising efforts.
The event, which took place on the Esplanade at Cowes on Sunday afternoon was held to raise funds for UKSA, the official charity of Aberdeen Angus Asset Management Cowes Week. Monies raised will go towards UKSA’s aim to offer every Year 6 primary school pupil on the Island the opportunity to enjoy a session on the water.
