Plans to build new homes on greenfield land at Newport Harbour have been reconsidered by the Isle of Wight Council.
In deciding against building houses at the entrance to Seaclose Park, off Fairlee Road, the authority said it had taken into account the wishes of the local community, including strong representations from the local member, Councillor Matthew Price.
The council said it would look to concentrate on development of other parts of the harbour site — so-called ‘brownfield’ land — as part of its ambitious Newport Harbour Masterplan.
Council leader, Dave Stewart, has said:
“I can confirm today that the Cabinet report, to be considered at next month’s meeting, will take this on board and this part of the plan will be changed accordingly.
“Our position is to secure development of affordable housing on the Island based on the evidence of need and with the support of the community.
“We want to minimise the development on greenfield sites on the Island and will only look to do so in exceptional circumstances and with the right environmental approach.
“A good example of this is the approved plan for the Branstone Farm site, near Arreton, where we will have affordable housing alongside our biosphere centre and jobs.
“We need the right homes, in the right place and Islanders in need must be our priority.”

Its something I guess, however, it is designed to divert attention from the other announcement…

…….
building on greenfield sites somewhere else though – will they never stop looking for ways to trouser more cash from concreting over the island – what is wrong with these people – where is the huge demand for all this housing – this needs to be stopped now.
The Pinks have enough work, for the moment then.
These people don’t give a hoot what ‘the public want’, IF they are not building, it is for other reasons than that.
Vote them OUT next time around.
Pots, how it works is this, the council give ‘crumbs’ off their vast feasting table to the public, in an attempt to make it ‘look’ as though they listened and care what the ‘people’ want.
Yet it will be because such building is small fry compared to other more lucrative project elsewhere, of which they will NEVER listen to the public, the town or parish councils or Island Roads, ‘because’ there is too much money in it for them and their very, very grateful developer friends, such as at P enny F eather, Bullen, and Nicolson rd etc. ALL beautiful ancient greenfield sites, but all large enough project to cream off millions and aid private businesses in the area owned by a ‘certain; top business councillor.
They treat the public as idiots, and whilst a few naive fall for their tricks, many see right through these greedy and likely very corrupt people now.
Vote this rubbish out is right.
Bet the Fairlee Garage owner is gutted. Forced out of business. Doesn’t seem fair or right.
