Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council has voted to oppose controversial plans to build more than 40 houses at Seaclose Park.
Not one council member opposed a motion by Councillor Mary Craven to ‘unreservedly oppose’ the plans drawn up by mainland consultants as part of the Newport Harbour Masterplan.
The Isle of Wight Council cabinet is due to vote on the plan in September but is coming under huge pressure to remove the Seaclose housing element from the document.
The vote of Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council comes as a petition organised by Councillor Matt Price, whose ward includes Seaclose, has been signed by over 3,000 people.
Cllr Price said:
“I would like to thank Cllr Mary Craven for bringing forward this motion and to all those members who voted for it. Its a fantastic endorsement of the campaign against this housing. The community, young and old and irrespective of party politics, is uniting against this awful proposal. We are seeing local democracy in action and, in this spirit, we would urge the IW Council to think again about this unwanted, unnecessary and hugely damaging proposal.”
“I am really encouraged that the Newport community is making its voice known loud and clear. It is completely unacceptable to build houses at this location – a valuable greenfield space that provides such a much-loved local amenity”.
The resolution was that Newport & Carisbrooke Community Council unreservedly opposes proposals within the Isle of Wight Council’s draft Newport Harbour Masterplan to build housing on Seaclose Park. The parish council recognises the importance of retaining green space in the town for residents to enjoy.
11 members voted for, there were none against and 2 abstained – Cllr Hastings and Cllr Hollis.
Sadly it will make NO difference, UNLESS it coincides what the main council desire.
Pennyfeathers in Ryde was the same, turned down by all the Ryde council, BUT made NO difference to the outcome.
These parish and town councils are fine if you complain of a full dog’s doo doo bin, or a broken bottle on the pavement, but pointless for anything meaningful.
This will also remove the only independent petrol station in Newport, another local business destroyed by grand plans.
Does the main Council actually take any notice of the people it is supposed to represent?
Does the main Council actually take into account anything the local Councils have to say?
It appears NOT, so what’s the point?
It appears the main Council will do what it wants anyway, so maybe its time to get rid of the Main Council.
Lets take politics out of the Councils while we are about it.
Absolutely agree, Oldbutalive. Yes housing is needed but ONLY FOR THOSE WHO ARE ON THE HOUSING ASSOCIATION WAITING LIST AND RESIDE ON THE ISLAND AND RESIDENTS WHO WANT TO BUY THEIR OWN HOME. No second homes and NO RELOCATIONS FROM THE MAINLAND. Granted, not all mainlanders are trouble, just don’t take the ones that are!
‘Mainland Consultants’ How much are they costing. If it’s not possible to re-generate the Quay area without having to be funded by housing (and increasing the population) DON’T DO IT
Will it make a difference? Will the Council listen? I doubt it. Let’s wait and see. This Council will ruin the island. Look at what is planned for Ryde. Terrible. Build affordable dwellings for ISLE OF WIGHT RESIDENTS ONLY. NO SECOND HOMES AND DEFO NO RELOCATION FOR MAINLAND LAW BREAKERS.
