HM Coastguard are coordinating a search and rescue operation involving the Coastguard helicopter and a local independent lifeboat in the South Wight this evening (Sunday).
Coastguard Rescue 175 from Lee-on-Solent and Sandown & Shanklin Independent Lifeboat are currently involved in the ongoing incident between Ventnor and St Catherine’s Point.
The independent lifeboat launched at around 16:10 and was seen heading south towards Ventnor in choppy seas. The lifeboat is now situated off Reeth Bay, where the Coastguard helicopter is also circling and has lowered a winch line.
Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team are also on scene. Members of the public report that there are 3 Coastguards in attendance at Castlehaven, alongside the helicopter and lifeboat.
UPDATE @ 18:10 – It has been confirmed that 2 adult walkers, who found themselves cut off by the tide, have been rescued by the Coastguard helicopter after attempting to climb up a cliff.
The red and white helicopter has successfully landed the causalities in a field off St Catherine’s Road with a crowd watching on.
Thankfully, the duo have escaped injury and are making their own way home.
A spokesperson for HM Coastguard has said:
“HM Coastguard received a call at around 15:45 this afternoon (26 July) after two people got cut off by the tide at St Catherine’s Point and attempted to climb the cliff.
“Needles and Ventnor Coastguard rescue teams, Sandown Independent Lifeboat and the Coastguard helicopter from Lee on Solent were all sent.
“The people were winched off the cliff by the helicopter and taken to the cliff top.
“They were able to make their own way home”.

I was on the beach with friends and the couple asked us if they could get to the lighthouse. We told them no as the tide was coming in, but they went ahead anyway. They were foreigners, possibly Spanish.

Why, just wait above water line until tide goes out and walk out, not going to get hyperthermia it’s summer, you can sleep out under the stars. Daylight at 4.30 ish
