Whitecroft & Barton beat Brading Town to advance to the semi-finals of the Isle of Wight Senior (Gold) Cup on Saturday (26th March).
W&B took revenge on the Romans at Vicarage Lane for their defeat at Sandy Lane in the Memorial Cup in February.
Whitecroft & Barton scored 1st against the run of play with a goal by Matt Evans from a break away from a Brading corner to lead 0-1 at half time.
W&B started well in the 2nd half, and the home side had a lucky escape when they hit the post. Brading then grew in confidence and believed they should have had a penalty when Dan Vale was knocked over in the box.
15 minutes from full time, the Romans equalized through a Todd Connor header. Brading then had chances to win the tie with Aaron Bennett almost getting on the end of an excellent through ball, Jacob Treagus firing just wide from the edge of the box, and a Matt Oatley free kick narrowly missing the far post.

After the game Brading Town manager Steve Lawton said:
“I was gutted to lose on penalties, but extremely proud of the effort the lads put in today. Again, the side changed due to players not being available, but the lads more than matched the champions in waiting. Penalties are a lottery and unfortunately for us we missed one and they scored all theirs.
“I’m delighted with the effort, commitment, and some of the football we played today. A good shift from all and more positives than negatives. W&B are the team to beat, have been for 7 or 8 seasons now, and we gave them a good game today.”

For Whitecroft & Barton, manager Gareth True said:
“I was disappointed it got to penalties. I thought we battled well in the 1st half and were the better side. Then, we took our foot off the gas in the 2nd half and gave a cheap goal away, which let them back in to the game. But on reflection, I suppose doesn’t matter in a cup competition how you get through as long as you do. “
W&B will meet either Cowes Sports or West Wight in the Gold Cup semi-finals. The Quarter final between Cowes Sports and West Wight is at Westwood Park on Tuesday evening. Kick-off is at 19:30.
