The Brotherhood MMA Jiu Jitsu team took part in the Brighton Spring Open on Sunday (6 March) and returned to the Island with 5 medals.
Lightweight white belt Liam Ingram won both of his fights convincingly to take gold in the Gi event but lost in the final to take silver to a tough opponent in the Nogi contest after a good back and forth battle.
Heavyweight white belt Corey Kent managed to win his first 3 matches but was pipped on points and just missed out on gold in the final in the Gi competition. In the Nogi competition, Corey won his first 2 fights by submission and was well on his way to winning gold in the final with a good points lead but got caught with an arm bar and had to settle for silver.
Middleweight brown belt Damian Kowalski had a tough first round in the Gi and lost out by a narrow margin on points. In the Nogi competition, Damian stepped up against a friend of the club and the two men had a good back and forth contest with Damian coming away with the gold.
Luke Nigh won first two bouts very convincingly but came up against a tough opponent in his 3rd and lost on points in the Gi competition. In the Nogi, Luke won his first two contests convincingly but then fought the same opponent and lost on points.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Team Coach Andy Law said:
“All 4 of the guys put in great performances, and I couldn’t be any prouder of the effort that they have put in to prepare for the competition and also how they conducted themselves on the day.”
Later on Sunday, Brotherhood MMA Coach Connor Tymon competed in Victory Fights at Mouslecoomb Leisure Centre. Connor fought tough fighter Jovan Majstorovic and was dropped at the beginning of round one. However, Connor bounced straight back up and applied the pressure continuously until the fight was stopped at 1 minute and 14 seconds, with Connor winning by technical knock-out.
On March 19th, Brotherhood MMA return to Chatham in Kent, for the Lion Fighting Championship, where Thomas Lee will compete for the light heavyweight title.
