A boat fire off the Hampshire coast delayed Ryde Beach Lifeguards’ annual Cross Solent Swim on Saturday, with participants later battling strong tidal currents to complete the challenge.
The charity swim from Gosport to Ryde got underway later than planned after a vessel caught fire just offshore from Gilkicker Fort, prompting a delay before the swimmers could safely enter the water.
Once the all-clear was given, the group set off at 13:00 on the annual fundraiser for Ryde Beach Lifeguards – an independent lifeguard service and registered charity.
Taking part were beach lifeguards from Ryde and Sandown, joined by 3 beach lifeguards from West Wittering Lifeguards, who previously completed their beach lifeguard training with the Ryde team, as well as a swimmer from Ryde Swimming Club.
The delayed start meant the team encountered particularly challenging conditions on the approach to Ryde, with a strong spring current working against them for the final part of the crossing.
Despite the difficult conditions, the first swimmer, Dave, reached the beach in front of Ryde Beach Lifeguard Tower at around 15:30, while the final participant completed the swim in just under 3 hours.
Safety cover was provided by Ventnor Bay Charters, Griffin Marine Services, Mr Bump and 2 beach lifeguard jet skis, with each swimmer also accompanied by their own kayaker to help keep them on course.
After reaching shore, all of the swimmers were presented with medals at the Ryde Beach Lifeguard Hut, before the West Wittering team was transported back to Gosport by Griffin Marine Services.
Funds raised through the annual Cross Solent Swim will go towards the purchase of new lifesaving equipment for Ryde Beach Lifeguards.
