Those heading to the seaside this summer are being urged to stay clear of swimming around Ryde Harbour due to strong currents that can quickly catch you off guard.
Ryde Beach Lifeguards were involved in the rescue of 6 children on Monday, with a further 8 people assisted at Ryde yesterday (Tuesday).
At around 15:40, a young girl on an inflatable drifted out and was rescued by the lifeguards using their kayak. The girl was taken back to the shore and provided with aftercare.
Just 10 minutes later and 4 bathers were spotted struggling in the water by the lifeguards, who deployed the kayak and rescue board. On arrival, it was 3 children and a dad. The children were panicking and grabbing onto dad, causing them all to start drowning. The 2 children were taken back to shore on the kayak and 1 child taken on the rescue board. Dad was able to swim back in.
When back at the shore, they were provided with aftercare from the team and HM Coastguard was informed.
At just gone 17:00, a lady was seen by lifeguards bobbing up in down out of her depth, trying to keep her son above the water with her older son struggling/panicking against the tide. Lifeguards used the inshore rescue boat to reach the trio with the oldest son hauled aboard. The lady was assisted to within her depth and met by another lifeguard on the beach.
Todd Miller, Beach Manager, has said:
“With RBLGs performing more rescues today, we are urging bathers to remain close to the shore and to NOT swim by Ryde harbour where there is a strong current that can quickly catch you off guard.

Inbreds no doubt or some of the vile, chavvy types that seem to be the only type of holiday maker that comes to the island. ice cream in one had, fag in the other, and fish n chips on their lap. Use your common sense people.

Well done to the rescuers! SHAME on the parents who seemed willing to drown their kids being incapable of either reading the water, or staying well inside their depth! Stupidity or inexperience is one thing but pure, unadulterated, moronic behaviour seems more apt in these cases! For the sake of the kids, PARENTS, if you don’t know the water, STAY OUT!
Well said I think we have many holiday makers who perhaps come from cities and no fault of their own do not know or understand the dangers of the sea and tides and currents. Maybe there should be more signage/info out there?
As for the rest well they should know better there’s been so many incidents lately.
