90s Britpop icons Space will perform at Strings Bar & Venue in Newport for the very first time tomorrow night (Friday).
Space are a band from Liverpool, who formed in 1992 as a trio of Tommy Scott (vocals, bass, guitar), Jamie Murphy (vocals, guitar) and Jamie Island (drums). The band first shot to fame in the mid-1990s
The band’s early work has been compared with 1960s guitar groups such as The Kinks and The Who, which made them part of the Britpop scene. Space ignored this and developed a more eclectic sound dubbed ‘queasy listening’. This sound embraced electronica and sampling in their work and drew from genres such as hip hop, techno, post-punk, ska, lounge music, easy listening, and film scores.
Space also became known for their deliberately tongue-in-cheek, dark humoured lyrics, which were inspired by Scott’s love of cinema, and frequently dealt with topics such as serial killers, failed relationships, social outcasts, and mental illness. Although Space’s eclecticism and humour have divided listeners and critics, they have maintained a cult following.
Space continue to write gritty, edgy pop songs that capture the imagination. They have sold over 5million records worldwide with album titles including ‘Spiders, Tin Planet’, ‘Suburban Rock and Roll’, and ‘Attack of the Mutant 50ft Kebab’. Their albums Spiders and Tin Planet have both been awarded double platinum disc status. The band’s most recent album, ‘Music for Pleasure Music for Pain’, was released in 2021.
Space have also released 10 top 40 singles and a host of other single releases to-date with titles including ‘Neighborhood’, ‘Female of the Species’, ‘Me and You Vs. The World’, ‘Avenging Angels’, ‘Dark Clouds’, and ‘Begin Again’.
