A petition signed by 1504 residents in Freshwater was handed to Cllr Jon Gilbey last Tuesday.
The petition calls for the Isle of Wight Council to reconsider its published plans to withdraw the free half hour parking at Moa Place in the town. It was put together by Wellow resident David Walter, who has campaigned against the changes from the start.
1200 names and addresses were signed on sheets left with retailers in Freshwater and 304 signatures were collected from the online petition website change.org. The comments left on the petition sheets and on the change.org website showed very strong feelings about the withdrawal of the free half hour, which is used extensively by drivers dropping-off and picking-up infirm patients to the doctors’ surgery; people picking up pre-ordered prescriptions; parents dropping-off and picking-up from the kindergarten; parents setting down and picking up children from the school and short term parking for people buying essentials in the local shops.
The consultation period ended at midday on Friday, when all objections must have been received. The proposed changes will now go to the Council’s executives for discussion.
