The Isle of Wight’s MP, Bob Seely, voted in favour of a tax increase when the motion went to vote in Parliament.
The increase of 1.25% is set to affect almost all workers who pay national insurance on their paycheque each month – even those who are currently receiving state financial aid to top up their income.
Despite the Conservative Party’s election pledge in 2019 to freeze taxes during their term in power, 316 MP’s voted in favour of the increase, with just 5 Tory’s staying true to their word and voting against it.
In an address this week, Chancellor Rishi Sunak told the nation that the money will go towards social care. £12 billion is expected to be generated from the new levy with the majority said to be going towards helping the NHS catch up with the post-coronavirus backlog
Bob has said:
“The decision to raise taxes was not taken lightly, but it will mean that we are more likely to be able to deal with the challenges facing health and social care in the UK following the coronavirus pandemic. Covid has changed the landscape. Having said that, I am very concerned that we have broken manifesto commitments”.
What does the 1.25% increase mean in real terms?
The increase isn’t actually 1.25% – it’s a 1.25% percentage point rise. It means that the average person earning £20,000 a year will now pay an extra £130 in national insurance. Meanwhile, someone earning £30,000 a year will pay an extra £255.
It’s said by Government that the proceeds raised could help to increase hospital capacity and create space for 9 million more appointments, scans, and operations.
It will mean that a cap will also be introduced on the cost of care, with care costs being set at a maximum of £86,000 over a persons entire lifetime. Those with assets worth less than £20,000 will have their care fully covered by the Government.

Need a democracy for that mate. We’ve never had fair representation in the UK. We have state TV, a Royal family that has a stipulated role in government and influence from religious groups. All incompatible with democracy. And we need a real bill of rights. And just don’t get me started on the 800+ unelected people in the house of lords.

Tories raising taxes and labour saying no. Can someone please fix reality, seems to be broken. We need an update from the developers. Last 18 months the game has got silly. Personally, as a high rate tax payer, £500 extra a year to pay for the pandemic is fine on me. But we all know it’ll be given to their mates.

One more thing is certain – that the rate will continue to rise.

The pandemic has driven a coach and horses through previously-held ideas, and there’s no doubt that fixing Social Care is going to need a lot of money.
But in true Tory fashion, this is a regressive tax increase. Why? Because NI is capped for employees, so the high earners will pay proportionally LESS than low-earners. Now had they applied Capital Gains Tax more widely, or even Inheritance Tax, that might have been more reasonable, but no.

Hope springs – why the hell are you advocating that the state steals more money from people when they die.
Someone works hard all their lives and then they decide who they want to leave their money and things to when they pass away. No one puts a line in their will stating that they want the government to have some of it, so what gives people who happen to work in government, the right to steal money from the dead.
Get a grip of yourself. Do you understand how capital gains works? Obviously not.

You don’t have to be rich for capital gains and inheritance helps the families of those who have worked hard all their life to build what they have.
As a worker I am happy to pay extra N.I so my grandchildren and their kids have a better system.
This is how life is, if you don’t like it move anywhere on the planet and see how they live. May I suggest Africa or Asia, then see how you get on without your comforts.

I’ve noticed similar happening. I just guess it’s because someone else voted at the same time, or a number of votes all get registered at same time and some cancel each other out.

The Conservative party only conserve one thing and that’s their own bank balance to hell with the rest! If this government carry’s on I fear there with be a huge civil unrest.
