West Wight overcame winless East Cowes Sports at the GKN Sports Ground in a closely fought encounter on Saturday (3rd September).
West Wight opened the scoring in the 19th minute through a Dan Burgess back heel at a corner (0-1). Blake Reeves then equalized for ECS shortly before the half time interval by directing a header into the back of the net from a corner (1-1).
Half time: East Cowes Sports 1-1 West Wight
West Wight won the game through an Ash Brett header from a Casey Tyrell corner 5 minutes from the full time whistle (1-2).
However. West Wight needed some determined defending to prevent East Cowes Sports from equalizing for the second time in the game as the home side piled on the pressure with long throws and corner kicks into the box in the final minutes. Makeshift West Wight goalkeeper Andy Rann made an excellent point blank save, and defender Si Merrett headed off the line just before the final whistle.

After the game, West Wight goal scorer Ash Brett said:
“Personally, I think we deserved to win as we were the better team overall but with the game so tight, they were always going to put us under pressure late on. We defended resolutely at the end and during the game when we needed to.”
For East Cowes Sports, Andy Brown said:
“We are creating lots of chances, just not getting rub if green currently in front of goal (in all our games to date). In the 2nd half, we hit the bar and their keeper made a couple of good saves and then literally at end from a corner. It was questionable that the ball went over the line, but the referee said West Wight had cleared it off the line before blowing the whistle for full time.
“Whilst we had 8 players missing yesterday, Aidan and I were proud and gutted for everyone who gave it their all (we deserved something out of game), against an experienced and tall side (we conceded both goals to set pieces).”
West Wight’s win leaves them in 8th place with 10 points from 7 games. East Cowes Sports are 2nd-from-bottom with no points from 6 games.
