Utilita Energy are set to open a ‘hub’ in Newport, bringing energy shops back to the High Street.
The company, which was founded in 2003, is one of Britain’s fastest-growing independent energy suppliers and specialise in smart pay-as-you-go meters. A total of 1,400 employees work across the group and Utilita serves just under 800,000 customers.
A planning application has this month been submitted to the Isle of Wight Council to transform the former Stead and Simpson shoe shop on Newport High Street into an ‘energy hub’. It will be the firm’s third such hub – the second in a national rollout – with existing stores in Gosport and Shirley.
The new store, which will be open from 09:00-17:30 between Monday and Saturday, will create 7 local jobs – a retail manager, a team leader, 3 full-time retail assistants and 2 part-time assistants. Staff will be on hand to help customers switch from their existing suppliers, provide face-to-face customer support and sell energy-saving gadgets.
Local good causes will also benefit from meeting space being offered free of charge as part of Utilita’s community ethos.
It is hoped Utilita’s Isle of Wight energy hub will open in February or March 2020.
A spokesperson has told Island Echo:
“We’re excited to bringing the benefits of the Utilita brand to the Island and look forward to opening our Newport energy hub early in the new year”.

The company have recently taken over customers of both Our Power and Eversmart Energy after the firms creased trading.
