Students across the Isle of Wight will be disappointed to learn that the Global Rock and J Rock competitions will not be taking place next year.
Global Rock Challenge Ltd have been unable to find the funds to stage 2020’s events, resulting in the cancellation of the popular, annual competitions.
Over 20,000 students from primary and secondary schools across the country compete each year, with the event being held locally at the Portsmouth Guildhall since 1996.
Helen Sjoquist, Executive Producer, has said that the budget simply doesn’t balance and the decision to cancel the events has been taken as they cannot ensure all creditors would be paid.
The Guildhall Trust in Portsmouth, which stepped in to help this year’s competitions when Be Your Best Foundation entered administration back in February, has this week said:
“It had been aimed that The Trust would support the events through 2019 before moving into full management and production responsibility in 2020, but The Trust now confirms that Global Rock Challenge Ltd did not wish to go ahead with the plans.”
Andy Grays, Chief Executive Officer of The Guildhall Trust, said:
“We have been working hard with the team at Global Rock Challenge Ltd over the last few months to put in place a sustainable agreement for the future which upholds the core values in which we all believe.
Article continues below this advertisement “We are deeply disappointed that the partnership will not go ahead and the parent company has cancelled events for next year, a decision that we know will cause great disappointment to a number of schools and children”.
It is unknown at this stage if Global Rock or J Rock will return in 2021.
