Newport & Carisbrooke Parish Council has voted to change their name to Newport & Carisbrooke Community Council in order to better reflect their role.
Councils at this tier of local government are free to call themselves, Parish, Town, Village, Neighbourhood or Community Council. Members felt the latter was the best fit for their council and unanimously voted for the change.
Chair Cllr Julie Jones-Evans said:
“Quite often people don’t connect with the name Parish Council and don’t see us as relevant to them. Finding out we could call ourselves Community Council really sparked my interest and I feel that our residents will have a better understanding that we are here for them. It describes perfectly what we are about now, which is more than just flower beds and Christmas lights. We control and manage significant assets and contribute a lot of funding to local services. I’m proud to call ourselves Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council”.
The council are also developing a new logo which incorporates Carisbrooke Castle, Newport Harbour as well as the traditional Newport ‘ship’, so both settlements are represented and the historical Newport crest in an up to date image.

Every time an organisation changes its name it costs money.
Problem with all Parish Councils is almost all councillors are of a similar ilk. Often retired early, bored with the other half, and miss having a position of power.
So they join a P C , but being of the same ilk cannot get ‘on’ with one another and form groups within the PC sniping at the rival factions.
A costly waste of public money
Suggest instead of wasting their money on this change of name, they spend it on upgrading the Gents toilets next to the bus station. No urinals, just three cubicles with toilets you cannot lift the seat on so people have to sit on loos which have been peed all over.
Bembridge rid its high street of six cubicles and three urinals and now has one tiny WC with no urinal. The seat never gets cold as always sat on during summer.
