Northwood St Johns were fortunate to beat Cowes Sports Reserves at the Community Club on Saturday (20th August) after referee Ali Taylor apparently failed to spot the Yachtsmen scoring.
The game began badly for Northwood when keeper Rio Barratt was forced off the pitch injured after 10 minutes with Joe White putting on the goalkeeping jersey.
Aaron Ince drew 1st blood for the home side when he curled the ball into the top corner of the goal (1-0). However, 2 minutes before halftime, Darren Williams equalized for the Yachtsmen, leaping like a salmon to head the ball over substitute keeper White.
Half time: Northwood St Johns 1-1 Cowes Sports Reserves
The Yachtsman appeared to have taken the lead midway through the 2nd half through a Teddy Mumford strike. However, referee Taylor ruled that the ball had first hit the crossbar and then the inside of the post.
10 minutes before the end of the contest, man-of-the-match James Butt took advantage of his side’s lucky reprise to convert a free kick for the home side and ensure Northwood retained all 3 points.
Northwood St Johns: Barratt, Woodford, Butt, Malcolmson, Collins, White, Butt, Ince, Blackmore, Whittle, Clarke Subs: Flux, Jones, MacKenzie
Cowes Sports Reserves: Gearing, Mumford, Cruise, Coshell, Biss, Laird, Voller, Williams, M.Novak, Norton, Pearson Subs: R.Novak, Toms, Holmes
Northwood’s win leaves them in 5th place in the Division 1 table with 7 points from 3 games; Cowes Sports are 9th with 3 points from their 3 games.
