Monkton Street in Ryde is to be upgraded by Island Roads shortly, after years of complaints by local residents.
The project to resurface what is a busy route through Ryde will be undertaken in 3 phases to reduce disruption to road users and residents.
Work is scheduled to begin on Monday 30th September and last for 9 days. The work hours will be between 06:30 and 18:00. During work the section being resurfaced will be closed to traffic but pedestrian access will be maintained at all times as long as it is safe to do so.
The 3 work sections will be from the St John’s Road junction to Park Road, the Park Road junction to Melville Street and from Melville Street to the Strand.
Businesses and residents will also receive letters explaining the scheme and how it will affect them including information on alternative parking while work is underway. The Tower House GP practice has also been informed and visitors are reminded that the building can be accessed via West Hill Road.
Keith Gourlay, Island Roads construction manager, said:
“By phasing these works we hope to reduce disruption in what is a very busy residential road.
“However it is impossible to undertake work of this nature in a location like this without causing some inconvenience and we thank residents and businesses in advance for their understanding.

The resurfacing work follows a scheme to improve highway drainage in Monkton Street carried out by Island Roads earlier this year.
About time. Will Southern Vectis be footing some of the bill? It’s their use of ‘city buses’ (so the can service the school contracts cheaply) in a non city environment that is damaging a lot of the roads on the island.
And not before time. It has been in a disgraceful state for several years, certainly since I moved to the island in 2015. The amount of damage done to every car using this route over the years must be very considerable!

And about time too. Just hope it does not become an extended fiasco as per the adjacent Park Road earlier this year. Well you have got to live in hope 🙂
At last, Island roads doing a road that needs doing, rather than doing miles of ‘out of the way’ country roads, where there are few or no drains, kerbs, drives or other obstructions, so they can ‘show’ that they have resurfaced a lot of miles of Island roads, keeping up their ‘quota’ rather than the more difficult, costly, but MOST needed town roads. Lets hope they don’t go ‘bust’ before the most needed roads are resurfaced.
Also, seems they don’t dig down and treat the underlying ground issues as I thought would happen, but just pile a huge amount of tarmac ontop the failing under surface, then needing all driveways, kerbs, drains etc to be raised so much.
One hopes they know what they are doing, but people thought the builders of the Titanic did too.
How about HIGH PARK road in Ryde next?
How about Bennet street Ryde, It’s like a white knuckle ride going down there in a bus. They are just as obscure with the Pavements and kerbs Park road, Monkton St pavements are in a terrible state and used by hundreds of people a day, lushington hill pavement has been resurfaced and i imagine no more than 20 people a day use it.
They ‘do’ the easiest ones, then can claim more acreage of ‘tarmac’ laid, those in towns have more time consuming issues to deal with.
So, like many things these days, priority matters not, it is all about stats.
Will the work be completed in time for the Beer & Buses weekend on 12th/13th October?
The Monkton Street pavements are indeed in a shocking state and desperately need attention.
If it were not for the dogs doo doo’s filling in some of the cracks and dips, it would be even worse
