Isle of Wight St John Ambulance volunteers are offering people the chance to learn how to help someone in cardiac arrest, with a series of free life-saving demonstrations on Thursday 10th October for 2019’s Restart A Heart campaign.
The demonstrations, held from 10:00 until 16:00 and 18:30 until 21:30 at St John Ambulance, 12 Manners View, Newport, coincide with an open evening at the same venue designed to showcase the volunteering opportunities and the unit’s first aid services to local residents and event organisers.
Derek Lammers-Wood, who volunteers with Newport adult, said:
“We’re really keen for local people to come along and learn some life saving skills as part of this year’s Restart a Heart campaign, but we’d also like people to drop in during the open evening to have a chat with us about St John Ambulance and what we do in the local community.”
Visitors to the opening evening (18:30-21:30) will be able to take a behind the scenes look at St John equipment and vehicles, including a first aid post and 2 ambulances, and speak to existing volunteers about the opportunities available with St John in the local community, such as becoming an adult first aider or youth leader with the Cadets (aged 11-17) or Badgers (aged seven to 10).
Derek added:
“Our youth groups have a good number of young people attending, but to expand further we need more youth leaders and helpers.
“We’d also like to be able to provide first aid at more community events, but to do this we need to increase our number of adult first aiders. In the long-term we’d like to reopen some of the units across the island – in WW2 there were 12, which is extraordinary!”
