The Marine Accident Investigation Branch has said that a report into last year’s grounding of the Red Funnel ferry off East Cowes is nearing completion.
On Sunday 21st October 2018 at 08:11, Red Falcon collided with and sank the yacht ‘Greylag’ in Cowes Harbour before subsequently running aground in soft mud just metres off East Cowes Esplanade. At the time of the incident, the visibility within the harbour was severely reduced by fog.
Red Falcon, which had 40 passengers and 8 crew on board, was re-floated later in the day having suffered no damage. There were no injuries sustained to passengers or crew and no pollution. The yacht Greylag was a total loss, however.
The MAIB says that their investigation so far has considered all aspects of the accident, including the environmental conditions, human factors relating to bridge operations, bridge procedures and aspects relating to Cowes harbour itself.
A draft report of the investigation is nearing completion and will be distributed to key stakeholders for a 30-day consultation shortly before then being released publicly.
