Police issued 52 tickets for offences such as speeding and driving with vehicle defects during a weekend-long roads policing operation on the Isle of Wight.
Officers from the mainland-based Roads Policing Unit joined local colleagues from the Armed Response Unit to address concerns relating to dangerous driving and speeding.
The majority of incidents reported to Police in recent weeks have related to Military Road and the surrounding West Wight area, where it’s known high-performance cars and motorbikes like to race up and down the road.
The operation resulted in 52 tickets being issued to motorists in this area for a number of different offences including speeding, driving with exhaust defects and driving with number plate defects. In addition to this, 2 people were arrested on suspicion of drug driving offences. A few Section 23 drug searches were carried out on vehicles too.
Over the course of Saturday and Sunday, Police engaged with the various biking groups that were out and about to educate riders. However, as previously reported by Island Echo, not all locals were happy about the action with motorists getting out their permanent markers to create warning signs.
Islanders are being reminded to take care on the roads.

Racing up and down the Milly Road! If they want to kill themselves so be it but it’s, as I keep saying poor innocent people get caught up on this madness. Irrisponsible idiots thinking they can use the public highway for racing. Well next week the police are going to pick on cars who cut corners, overtake on corners don’t indicate and never use there mirrors and drive though the town with 1.8 tons of car at speed while wearing sun glass but that’s ok
A step in the right direction, except it should be happening all the time.
It should be happening in towns and villages foremost, rather than just out on the military road.
Such as the noisy cars and motorbikes blasting at speed round and round Freshwater, making life very stressful here.
This was a good initiative. People prepared to flout the law need to be brought to book. A few points and a fine may make them think.
Hope this is repeated more often as cars and motorbikes are killing machines in the hands of arrogant and irresponsible people.
The moron(s) who put up the cardboard warning signs are not very intelligent. If the signs result in irresponsible drivers and riders evading a fine and points, they will then think they are invincible and won’t change their ways, if they go on to kill themselves or someone else then I hope the sign writers can live with that.
If they speeders had been caught instead they would possibly think again and drive or ride better in future with points hanging over them.
Roads are not race tracks , I love cars but track days are the way to test your skills away from public roads.
I think covert speed cameras are needed as our roads are becoming hazardous because of a few irresponsible drivers.
