The next phase of a project to rebuild and resurface part of York Avenue at East Cowes has got underway today (Thursday), with Island Roads saying that the road could be closed for up to 3 weeks.
The PFI contractor says that the work is being undertaken ‘when traffic is minimal due to the COVID-19 restrictions’ and there are reduced Red Funnel sailings. However, the work is expected to extend into the post-lockdown period after 4th July.
Island Roads is hoping to complete the work in around 2 weeks’ time but has applied for a 3-week road closure to allow for unforeseen delays.
Keith Gourlay, Island Roads construction manager, said as much of the project as possible has been completed under traffic lights. However, for the section across Victoria Avenue and a stretch 70 metres to the north of the junction it was necessary to close the road to complete the strengthening works.
He says:
“Given the depth of the excavation required to strengthen the road and in order to keep the site safe for our staff, it is necessary to close the road for this next phase”.
During the closure, a diversion via York Avenue, Adelaide Grove, Victoria Grove, Beatrice Avenue and Saunders Way will be in place.
Keith said:
“We apologise in advance for any inconvenience this work will cause. But as all those who use it will know, this is a section that is very much in need not just of resurfacing but of rebuilding as well.
“We hope that this extensive work now will ensure this busy gateway road remains in good condition for many years to come.”
Brilliant timing. Just as the Ferry companies are reaching full capacity on their reduced service and may possibly have to increase the sailings to cover the traffic.
Especially as Boris has effectively opened up the Holiday Trade.

They need to sort out the parked cars on the diversionary route – it was chaos this morning.

Island roads not got a bloody clue or and interest in the upheaval they cause by total mis management of road closures ,with all this lot going on in York avenue why the hell mess about with the back streets at the same time .East Cowes total chaos ,especially with arctic lorries trying to pass at whippingham church above all places ,,,,, island roads management team laughable
The diversion signs send you as a resident round and round in circles lolol come on island roads get it sorted
To many side road closed for no reason , already seen a sign in a hedge lol someone p off
Can someone help ?……… I’ve just tried to get home and the diversion signs have just sent me around in a very large circle and still no nearer to my destination . I’ve had to go rogue and drive through the road closed sign !!
Would it not of been a good idea for Island roads to tell residents that their roads would be closed on certain dates not just a letter stating there would be delays. (Oh sorry, they don’t care because they don’t live here !)
If Keith Gourlay thinks Victoria Avenue is in East Cowes then it is no wonder the PFI is a mess or was that a reporting error by IE ?
