A truly unique Christmas lights display at Wellesley Way in Newport has been named the winner of Light up the Wight 2019.
Entry number 23 received the highest number of votes in this year’s Christmas lights competition, which saw a total of 1,100 votes cast by Island Echo readers during the month of December.
In a new format for 2019, for every 10 votes received each property gained 1 point. These points were then added to a judge’s rating to obtain a final score.
The display at Wellesley Way, curated by Martin Penney, scored highly for the use of homemade lights linked to a computer and timed to music. This year Martin went the extra mile and installed equipment to allow passing visitors to tune in their car radios to hear the tunes.
Hundreds and hundreds of families travelled around the Island in their own cars by following the Light up the Wight map, which offered a list of 24 properties to visit – 23 entries and the Star Display of Long Lane in Newport. Southern Vectis were also once again offering their Christmas Lights tour from Ryde and Newport which took in a number of the biggest displays.
Rain was a reoccurring problem throughout the month of December but this led to a very busy 48 hours in the run up to Christmas Day as Islanders made the most of clearer skies. It is yet to be seen if the wet weather affected charity donations.
Wellesley Way has secured prize money of £250 towards 2020’s display, with £100 going to 2nd place Green Lane, Shanklin (81A) and £50 to Worsley Road, Gurnard. Just 1 point separated 2nd and 3rd place!
Thank you to everyone who voted – see you again in December!
