A worldwide audience will now get the chance to see the stunning views at Appley Beach in Ryde with the introduction of a new webcam – the second to be launched in the town this year.
The camera, which can pan 180 degrees, will change its viewpoint throughout the day and will include views of Appley Tower and the Solent Forts. However, between the hours of 10:00-17:00 the camera will remain static and the feed can be cut if deemed necessary.
The camera, which is being hosted by Ryde Inshore Rescue, has been funded with the help of a £1,500 marketing grant from Ryde Town Council.
A similar camera fitted to the spire of All Saints Church in July has already attracted over 175,000 page views from visitors around the UK and beyond.
The idea came from Wight Media Services’ Managing Director and former ITV Reporter, Dave Russell, who believes it’ll continue to help promote the town.
Dave said:
“Ryde has one of the best beaches in the South but many visitors don’t know about it. Having a live camera showing that we have this stunning location will hopefully attract more visitors to the town during the summer months. ITV News have already used a time-lapse of sun rise at Appley in a news package on Tuesday 12th Dec.”
The camera is capable of zooming some distance and can give unique views of events in The Solent. Recently it caught the arrival of HMS Queen Elizabeth passing one of the Solent Forts.
Ryde Rescue’s Ady Farrell says:
“As well as promoting Ryde, the camera will give us the potential for an extra set of eyes on the beach when the lifeboat station is unmanned. We already view the camera on All Saints Church and this is an added safety element.”
