The Isle of Wight Council’s Trading Standards team are warning Islanders about a recent scam involving a telephone call from what is purported to be the ‘Valuation Office’.
Reports have been received on the Isle of Wight that residents have been receiving calls from the ‘Valuation Office’ advising that they could be on the wrong council tax band.
The scammers have been asking residents to give their card details and to make a payment in order for the ‘Valuation Office’ to look into the matter further.
Trading Standards are reminding Islanders that the Valuation Office does not operate in this way – this is a scam and the scammers are taking advantage of the Isle of Wight’s Council Tax bills being sent out at this time.
Anyone who receives one of these calls should hang up straight away. Never give out your bank details over the phone – no legitimate company would ever ask for them in this way.
