THEATRE: THEATRE WORKSHOPS AND REHERSALS UNDERWAY THIS SUMMER AHEAD OF BUSY AUTUMN

FootlooseIt’s August! Summer holidays mean many of our Island amateur theatres are quiet, giving their members a break before the packed autumn schedules begin.

However, summer holidays also mean youngsters out of school have the opportunity to join workshops led by experienced actors, musicians dancers and teachers and create their own piece of theatre.

The Island Savoyards’ Summer Workshop is at it again – ‘it’ being creating an amazing show in just a few days! This year they are producing the well-known musical ‘Footloose’. They invite young people to sign up for a week-long immersive experience from 23-28th August, with the show staged at Shanklin Theatre at the end of the week.

Further details are available from [email protected]. And for those (like me) a little too old to join in, we can still enjoy what promises to be a brilliant show by booking tickets at   https://www.shanklintheatre.com/events.aspx or from the Shanklin Theatre Box Office on 01983 868000.

First Act are also holding workshops for adults with additional needs at Sandown Rugby Club on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays – call Lottie on 07814 683502 or email [email protected] for further details.

OliverposterThe Apollo Players are staging the musical ‘Oliver’ at the Apollo Theatre from 19th-27th August (not Sunday or Monday). Lionel Bart’s iconic show needs little introduction, and the company are delighted to be bringing you a production of the musical dramatisation of Charles Dickens’ story about the orphan boy who ‘wanted some more’.

Tickets are available at  https://www.apollo-theatre.org.uk/oliver/ or by calling 01983 210010.

In case you thought all other thespians were getting a break though, there are also some theatre groups in rehearsal for shows coming up in September or later in the year:

Over in Bembridge Village Hall you will find members of the newly-formed GASP (Gilbert and Sullivan Productions) in fine voice as they prepare to bring you one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s most famous and popular operettas, ‘The Pirates of Penzance’ in September – it promises to be as full of laughter as of music, and tickets are already on sale at https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/Bembridge-Little-Theatre-Club/the-pirates-of-penzance/e-byvdjd or call the box office on 07841 950261.

The Island Savoyards, Apollo Players and Ventnor Theatre Group are also working on ‘Guys and Dolls’, ‘Handbagged’ and ‘Rock Nativity’ respectively, and Bembridge Little Theatre Club have just cast the play ‘Lettice and Lovage’ to be performed in November.

I also hear rumours that the much-acclaimed Ad Lib open air production of ‘Hamlet’ is set to make a return on 5th November, this time under cover – look out for further details of all these shows in the next few theatre columns!
