It was a busy weekend for the rowers of Newport Rowing Club who competed in events both on the Island and in Christchurch.
The weekend started with Newport juniors representing their school, Christ The King College in Newport, at the National Junior Indoor Rowing Championships.
Connor Garner took a personal best of 6.42sec for 2000m to make a top 5 finish, and Boris Hare competing at the event for the first time finished 49th in a field of 128.
Both boys were also competing at the Head of the Stour in Christchurch on Sunday.
Along with William Loveday-Powell and Atur Rozvodovski, and coxed by Marianna Hare they missed out on 1st place in the J16 quad by less than a 2nd in what was a brilliant result, especially for Atur, who came to the Island from Ukraine and has only been rowing for 2 months.
In the 2nd division Boris, Will and Connor were joined by masters rower Chris Clarke in the Men’s Novice event, where they finished 4th.
Newport was also able to field a Masters Women’s crew for the very first time in their 160-year history.
The crew of Julie Clarke, Julia Coulson, Jo Hand and Fran Ladd, coxed by Nick Salter rowed in the coastal 4 and came a creditable 3rd, rowing against more experienced crews.
