Project contractors Carter Lauren have successfully completed the substructure works and steelworks for the new 100-bed hotel and Cookhouse + Pub restaurant building on the Esplanade.
It was back in December 2015 that Island Echo exclusively reported that the Carlton Hotel would be demolished to make way for a third Premier Inn on the Isle of Wight. Planning permission for the scheme was granted in late 2016 and demolition of the former Carlton Hotel took place in 2017 and early 2018.
Now, nearly 4 years after the project was first announced, work is in full swing with the opening potentially just 6-8 months away. It was originally hoped the hotel would open at the end of 2017.
Geoff Cook, Senior Project and Programme Manager, says:
“We are making great progress with the construction of Premier Inn Sandown. The extensive substructure works have been completed and the steel frame of the new building has been installed as we prepare to begin working on the superstructure.
“We’ve also finished the concrete deck on the first floor and have begun erecting the timber frame of the remaining floors. We are expecting to complete the timber framing in November and there will be an increase in deliveries to the site during this period.
“We apologise for any inconvenience caused and we will continue to do all we can to minimise disturbance as much as possible.”
The new hotel will create approximately 65 year-round jobs.
