Artist Anna Keen will be hosting a Speed Sketching Race as part of the Wandering the Wilderness project, focussing on the historical architecture of Newport, on Saturday (22nd October).
Anna Keen is a British artist, born on the Isle of Wight in 1968 and brought up on the remote Scottish island of Arran. However, she has spent the majority of her life in Europe. She studied for 6 years at the art school in Paris L’Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts, where she obtained her diploma with distinctions. She has lived and worked as an artist in Rome, Venice, London and Amsterdam, where she has had over ten solo shows, participated in seventy collective exhibitions, won several prizes and is represented in important private collections.
Anna Keen has now returned to the UK and is Resident Artist at Dimbola Museum, Freshwater Bay. She is working on a series of Landscapes, Portraits and Marines from London and the Isle of Wight. Her art has an epic and unsettling edge.
Anna will be having an exhibition of oil and ink landscapes along with recently created work for the Newport Heritage Action Zones project at Quay Arts later in the year.
This is a fun opportunity for participants to test out their rapid response drawing skills around a unique Art Race Course and win a waterproof winter sketchbook prize.
Participants should meet at 14:00 in St Thomas’ Square, Newport for the race debrief and collect a waypoint map, which highlights certain buildings to speed-sketch as you round the Art race course. The race then starts at 2:22. Final sketches will be published online and optional feedback offered. Participants are welcome to bring their own materials/smartphone to make their artwork, but Anna will also have some materials for those who need them. (Anna uses the app Pro create on her iPad and Pocket create on her iPhone).
There will also be an outdoor exhibition around the town centre of the Art Road-Signs that Anna has created through this project.
