Shanklin has secured the coveted Seaside Award for 2017 following the Town Council’s funding of beach cleaning, toilet provision and other projects in recent years.
Town Mayor Jon Gilbey has this week been presented with the flag and plaque by Isle of Wight Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Business Development, Cllr Wayne Whittle.
As well as beaching cleaning, funding has been allocated by the Town Council to upgrade decorative lighting, hanging baskets and floral displays, as well as over £100,000 for toilet projects at Falcon Cross and Tower Cottage Gardens.
Mayor Jon Gilbey said:
“We are delighted to be recognised by the Keep Britain Tidy campaign. This follows the re-opening of the £1million Lift and securing over £6million Southern Water investment”.
Richard Priest, who co-ordinated the Seaside Award initiative, added#:
“It has been a team effort, working with the longshoremen, Island Roads and other local stakeholders, to secure this prestigious award and help promote Tourism in Shanklin and across the Bay”.
Mayor Gilbey concluded:
“We’d like to thank Wayne and the Campaign for this Award. We remain committed to building on this success in future years, as well as supporting other initiatives to maintain and enhance the services provided to residents and tourists”.
Other beaches on the Island to be awarded a Seaside Award include Sandown, Seagrove Bay and Springvale.
