Firefighters and local residents of Ryde gathered for a special service of remembrance today (Friday) in memory of Leading Fireman Herbert Dewey and Fireman Colin Weeks, who both lost their lives during the Cowes Blitz in the early hours of 5th May 1942.
Rev Canon Graham Morris from All Saints Church led the service to mark the 75th anniversary of the Ryde firemen’s deaths. A poem entitled ‘On the Run’ was read out by Crew Manager Damon Corr, the driving force behind the organisation of the event.
The parade of firefighters from Ryde Fire Station – known as National Fire Service Division 14d back in 1942 – were called to attention before The Last Post was played by buglers from Vectis Marching Band.
Standard bearers of the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service and the Ryde Branch of the British Legion lowered their standards and 2 minutes of silent remembrance was held.
Dr Kieron Cooney of the Wight Hot Pipes played Amazing Grace on his bagpipe, after which wreathes were laid on the graves of Leading Fireman Dewey and Fireman Weeks.
Ryde Social Heritage Group provided refreshments in the North Chapel afterwards.
