Sandown Town Council has been forced to close one of the town’s public conveniences after vandals caused extensive damage to the facilities overnight.
The toilets in Eastern Gardens – which were also vandalised in March 2020, as previously reported by Island Echo – have seen tiles stripped from the walls and smashed, with porcelain pieces scattered across the floor.
Council officers and contractors have worked to repair damage to the accessible toilet so that some provision remains available, and further work is being planned to enable the ladies toilets to be open for the weekend, with the men’s toilets to be repaired during the week.
The Town Council says that local witnesses have identified the person responsible and that it has reported the damage to the police – with discussions due to be held at the council’s meeting on Monday.
UPDATE SATURDAY – 24-year-old Scott Thick, from Sandown, has been charged with 3 counts of Criminal Damage.
He has been bailed to appear at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on 28th May 2021.

WTF…. As reported on Facebook, it was one stupid bloke who did this with a lump of wood. He should be made to pay for the damage he has caused. If he is let off, where is the justice???

This is not the crime of the century, but is totally unacceptable.
It will cost a lot to repair and all of us pay via our Council Tax.
If the suspect is convicted I hope he is given a harsh punishment, maybe cleaning public toilets unpaid, for 5 years! plus costs.
He should be named if he’s guilty.
Will explain he has got family problems and recently lost his job, will end up
with a £50 fine with 10 years to pay it.
what was he doing hanging around in a public toilet with anger issues such as this – it would appear that it was good fortune that no one else happened to require the use of the toilet as well.
needs to be made to pay for the damage, publicly shamed and then asked “so, what were you doing, hanging around the toilets for”
