Ryde Slide 2017 has been hailed a great success with Sunday’s event having raised a record breaking total of £5,000 for 5 local charities.
Hundreds of people both young and old jumped aboard the slide which was situated further down Union Street on a steeper incline, allowing for a faster slide and a giant splash at the end. New entertainment for 2017 included a giant ‘Total Wipeout’ area and Victorious Festival bar ahead of the Portsmouth festival on the 25th, 26th and 27th August.
The family fun event, with new title sponsors Wightlink, sold out ahead of schedule with only a small amount of tickets available on the day.
Following on from the success of this year’s event Aspire Ryde, Waterside Community Trust, Ryde Inshore Rescue, The Wight Brainy Bunch and Ryde Arena Community Action Group have all received cheques for £1,000. Recipients and sponsors came together at Ryde Fire Station this morning (Tuesday), with the station charity fund to receive 50% of The Wight Brainy Bunch’s £1000.
The fundraising event was established in 2015 by Councillor Wayne Whittle who first discussed the idea of a giant water slide coming to Ryde on Twitter with the hashtag #Rydeslide.
Cllr Wayne Whittle commented:
“We are so pleased that the Wightlink Ryde Slide has been able to raise a record breaking amount of money to help five local charities. We want to give special thanks to the Ryde Firefighters, Ryde Inshore Rescue and all the volunteers who make this event possible.
“Extra thanks to Solent who organised the whole event and to HSS and all our sponsors, this has been the best year yet”.

Discussions are already underway to bring Ryde Slide back in 2018.
