Ryde residents are being invited to get their hands dirty and discover the joys of gardening at an inclusive community allotment in the town.
Mayfield Road Community Allotment has received initial funding from SNG to help get the project off the ground, creating a space where local people can meet, learn new skills and grow their own fresh fruit and vegetables.
Organisers say the allotment has been designed to be as accessible and inclusive as possible, with residents encouraged to take part regardless of disability, mobility issues or other limitations.
A raised planter has already been installed to make gardening easier for those who may find it difficult to reach ground level, while support can be provided for people with impaired vision.
The group will also look at providing adaptive tools and equipment where needed to help ensure as many people as possible can take part.
No previous gardening experience is required, with both seasoned growers and complete beginners welcome to learn at their own pace.
Those who get involved will also be able to enjoy the fruits – and vegetables – of their labour, as produce grown at the allotment can be taken home by those who have helped grow it.
As well as providing fresh produce, organisers hope the project will give residents the chance to meet new people, make connections, learn gardening skills and spend more time outdoors.
The group currently meets every Wednesday lunchtime at the Mayfield Road site in Ryde, with residents welcome to turn up from 12:00.
