Retained ‘on-call’ firefighters are being sought by the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service in Bembridge, East Cowes and Yarmouth.
On-call firefighters provide the Island’s retained duty system (RDS), an essential part of the emergency service. The men and woman come from every walk of life and include shopkeepers, builders, plumbers, farmers, secretaries, engineers and directors of companies, together with people who are not currently employed.
You don’t need previous experience as the service provides a comprehensive training programme. What is important is that you are enthusiastic and can meet certain essential requirements, including fitness and medical. Crucially, you must be able to reach the fire station quickly and safely within 6 minutes after being alerted to an incident by pager.
On average you could be called out 2 or 3 times a week for 1 hour. If you can’t be available all of the time it’s not a problem; the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are particularly keen to hear from people who are available during weekdays and weekends. You will also be required to attend a training session each week known as drill night.
In return you will be well paid and receive thorough training enabling you to achieve a Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) licence, a certificate in First Aid, plus all there is to know about emergency situations.
