PRISONER GIVEN EXTRA 5 YEARS FOR SETTING FIRE TO HMP ISLE OF WIGHT

39-year-old Dino Laximidas has been sentenced to a further 5 years in prison after setting fire to HMP Isle of Wight almost 3 years ago.

A major incident was declared on 18th February 2015 as a blaze ripped through 2 floors of Alpha Wing at Albany prison, resulting in 7 fire engines, an aerial appliance and 8 ambulances attending the scene off Parkhurst Road, Newport.

Many firefighters who have since spoken to Island Echo say that those incarcerated within the prison were lucky to escape with their lives. A total of 15 prisoners were treated for smoke inhalation and 87 prisoners were evacuated. In the days after the incident, inmates were transferred to mainland prisons due to a lack of cells as a result of the devastating fire.
