Ryde Rowing Club, sponsored by Wightlink, competed at Woolston Regatta held at Western Shore, Southampton on Saturday (23rd July).
Following his disappointing performance at Southsea Regatta, the club’s Coastal Junior Sculler Dale Buckett produced his best performance of the season so far to take his first win at this status following his promotion from Novice earlier in the season. The club’s other Single Sculler Joel Smith also performed well in his Novice Sculls event, winning his heat and finishing second in his final in a very close race.
Joel then teamed up with James Smith to race in the Coxless Coastal Junior Pairs where they produced another good performance finishing third in the final. James also competed in the Men’s Coastal Junior Four along with Dom Douglas, Ben Toms and Joe Groves – coxed by Dale Buckett – who finished in fifth place in their third outing at this status.
The Ladies Coastal Junior Pair of Catherine and Lisa Murphy finished fifth in their final.
The club’s Coastal Junior Ladies Fours also performed well with the ‘A’ crew of Kristy Newman, Lisa Murphy, Ayesha Russell and Catherine Murphy – with Mick Jenner coxing – finishing third in the final after comfortably qualifying from their heat. The ‘B’ crew of Abi Locke, Julie Cole, Karen Crook and Kate Whitehurst – coxed by Allan Evans – will be a little disappointed not to have made the final in a close race.
Ben Toms also raced in a composite Novice Four with Southampton finishing fifth.
There is now a 2 week break in competition before the club competes again at the Itchen Imperial Club Regatta on the River Itchen in Southampton on 13th August before the season heads towards its climax at the South Coast Rowing Championships in Herne Bay on the 3rd September.
