Bembridge Parish Council are set to discuss the possibility of a 20mph speed limit through the entire village following the inaugural meeting of the newly established Road Safety and Security Group.
During July’s meeting it was proposed that a 20mph speed limit is required for the whole of Bembridge, a proposal that was agreed upon and will now go forward to the Parish Council’s full meeting in September. Nearby Brading lobbied for almost a decade to get a 20mph speed limit through part of the town.
Despite the calls for a new, lower blanket limit on all roads in the village of Bembridge, data analysis of the 20mph speed reactive sign outside Bembridge Primary School shows that 96% of motorists break the speed limit there.
Addressing the situation at King’s Road near Embankment Road, the group have suggested that if a 20mph speed limit was introduced then a traffic calming measure would also be required on this stretch of road. A speed camera could be another option to explore.
As well as lobbying for the speed limit changes, a Community Speed Watch scheme is set to be introduced following the attendance of PCSO Moul and PCSO Hull at August’s meeting of the Road Safety and Security group, where the scheme was explained to those attending.
Cllr Julie Jones-Evans from Newport is to be invited to a future meeting of the group to share her experiences of the county town’s ’20’s plenty’ campaign, which has been met with opposition by many Islanders.
