Ryde’s Town Crier is set to hang up his bell after 10 years in the role.
Steve King, of Dover Street, is retiring from the respected position on 24th April. However, the familiar face is set to become the Town Crier for Southampton.
Over the past decade, Steve has been seen front and centre of the town’s many carnivals and parades as well taking his place in the High Street to make important announcements such as the declaration of a new store opening, or announcing the Queen’s birthday.
The role of a Town Crier dates back to medieval times but has changed dramatically over the years. In bygone days the Town Crier used to announce public hangings!
