Over 8,000 people stepped out in the name of charity yesterday (Sunday) for the 29th annual Walk the Wight, in aid of Mountbatten IW.
Fundraisers put on their boots, slapped on the sun cream and set out on the unique 26.5 mile challenge to raise much-needed funds for the Island’s hospice.
Walkers set off from Bembridge at 06:00 on either the half walk to Carisbrooke or the full walk to Alum Bay. Other eager fundraisers began their journey at Carisbrooke to complete the half walk to Alum Bay, whilst those taking part in the full walk used the beautiful views behind Carisbrooke Castle as a much-welcomed lunch stop.
The first person to cross the line on the full walk was Lloyd Woodhouse in a time of 4 hours 34 minutes. He ran from Bembridge to Alum Bay.
Once again the 8-mile Flat Walk took place between Sandown and Shide with individuals, families and pets of all ages enjoying the leisurely stroll along the old railway line. The Schools Walk also took place from Freshwater to Alum Bay via Tennyson Down.
The weather was absolutely perfect for those taking part across the Isle of Wight with smiles all round – as captured by Island Echo’s photographer, Chris Cornford.
Nigel Hartley, Chief Executive of Mountbatten, who presented medals at The Needles having earlier completed the Flat Walk, said:
“It was an incredible day. There were so many people and there was a very special atmosphere across all the walks.
“The support was extraordinary and the stories of courage and determination were both humbling and inspirational.
“On behalf of all of us at Mountbatten, thank you to everyone for being part of a very special day”.
Mountbatten have thanked those involved in 2 medical emergencies during the walk, as previously reported by Island Echo. Mountbatten is liaising with the emergency services and an update on the two incidents will be issued when more information is available.
