Families gathered beside the seaside in Bembridge yesterday (Saturday) for the annual Bembridge RNLI Open Day.
Raising awareness and funds for the life-saving charity was a key theme of the event, as well as providing vital safety advice to the hundreds of families and individuals exploring the lifeboat station.
Once again the volunteer crew put on a fantastic demonstration of the both the inshore and all weather lifeboat’s capabilities. Using the inflatable swan that was previously rescued, the D-Class inshore lifeboat launched from the shore and carried out a ‘rescue’ in front of the crowds gathered.
It was then time for the All Weather Lifeboat to launch from the packed-out boathouse. The lifeboat demonstrated the on board Y-Boat and how the different sized lifeboats can work together to safely recover casualties.
Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team were on hand to explain their role and how they work alongside the RNLI on incidents around the Island’s coastline. The team’s Coastguard Rescue Officers were also able to give safety advice.
The sunny conditions allowed for a full selection of arts and crafts stalls to set up on the green with gorgeous homemade cakes and plenty of tea on offer.
Bembridge Lifeboat will be launching this morning (Sunday) at 11:30 for the Sandown Regatta.
